How are electricians made?
In the UK electricians have traditionally gained their initial training and experience through an apprenticeship scheme that combines formal courses and examinations with a period of at least 3 years working under the guidance of a qualified electrician. At the end of the apprenticeship they become fully qualified and can register with a scheme like the one run by NICEIC
We recently just finished a stunning lighting design and installation to a customers garden in Cambridge
The project was very different from out usual garden lighting projects. The garden was already finished and planted! So we couldn't dig and bury cables into positions and we also had to be careful about damaging plants and corrugated piping
So the whole project was a complete retrofit!
We had to think carefully about how we were going to install the cables and how the customer would be able to functionally switch them on
Your garden has so much potential - it can now be regarded as another room in your home - the last few years have seen rise to people opting for decking in their gardens - after all it is low maintenance, versatile and allows friends to congregate in one area with the possibility of stylish lighting added
DIY Electrical Work Sparks Renewed Warnings
A recent survey sent to UK householders reveal the dangerous risks that UK householders take when carrying out work on their home electrics
Whilst not all DIY electrical work is illegal, it does require a common sense approach. It is perfectly legal for to carry out like for like DIY electrical work in your home so if you are looking to replace some lights in your living room or replace a broken or cracked socket then you can do this – but only if you feel confident in doing so
Unfortunately this scenario crops up quite often when I go out to visit clients
I hear often that electricians turn up hours after they had arranged, or in some cases not at all. This understandably leads to much frustration on the customers part and a general distrust of electricians in general
I am proud to be Huntingdon's local electrician
A strange title you may feel but to me this is an all encompassing statement and one which hopefully every electrician will say. But does their work and standards reflect how proud they say they are
I’ve said it before and I will say it again that every electrician is different. Unfortunately no electrician is exactly the same and therefore it is important that as the customer, you know what will work best for you. Let me explain in more detail
Research available from the electrical safety body, the NICEIC, has found that the public are mostly unaware of the electrical dangers lurking in their homes. Householders that were questioned had electrical hazards in their homes including exposed bare wires, loose cables, old wiring and overloaded sockets
Many house holders in Huntingdon often ring me to ask if there is a problem with their electrical supply. Understandably they are not sure if it is safe to continue to use their electrical appliances at home or if they should call an electrician
The basic advice is if you suspect a problem with an electrical appliance, unplug and stop using it immediately, however if you suspect a problem with your actual electrical installation then consult your local qualified electrician who will be happy to come and take a look
It has recently caught my attention that some of our customers are not aware of the aftercare services that we offer following works that we carry out
I would like to take the time to educate you on what you can expect from us after we have completed your works

The NICEIC is the UK’s leading regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry and have been operational for some 60 years. All of their contractors are assessed regularly to make sure that they are competent in their field and adhere to stringent technical and safety standards.
Under their platinum promise, any workmanship is protected for six years, meaning if you are unhappy with any work carried out, you can contact them and they will send an independent tradesman to check the quality of the work and redo if necessary.
Not only does this give you peace of mind from the financial viewpoint, but it promises that the craftsmanship you are paying for is of impeccable standard.
